Known today as a column & cornice clock, Jerome identified the model as the “Small Column Spring”. The 1853 Jerome catalog lists a column spring clock, but it is described as being 20 inches tall. This small column spring comes in at 18 inches. I do not know whether it was also offered in 1853 or was perhaps a later addition to their product line.
This label is found in many shelf clocks from the 1850s and is one of several used by Jerome during this period. There are few clues that allow definitely dating or sequencing labels from the 1850s.
I love the fact that this clock has the model tag tacked to the top of the case.
8-day spring-driven movement made by Chauncey Jerome or by the New Haven Clock Co. for Jerome. This was a standard movement used by Jerome in both weight- and spring-driven clocks. Interestingly enough, clocks with this label have also been found with an 8-day spring-driven movement made by A.S. Platt & Co. See this Jerome steeple for an example.
