Chauncey Jerome Ogee #8

040314-1-1-rep1

An ogee clock dating to around 1845, possibly shortly after the fire destroyed the Bristol factory buildings on April 23 of that year. The dial is not original, but it is appropriate for a clock with this particular Benham label (below). When purchased, this clock had a mirror that was not original. The tablet was taken from a New Haven Clock Co. ogee that dates to more than 20 years later than the tablet.

One of the earliest labels printed by John Benham for Chauncey Jerome; somewhat unique in that it features a peacock in the left and right border.

Printer’s line showing “BENHAM, Printer,/55 Orange st., New Hav(en)”

Type 1.311 30-hr movement (front), with no maker’s stamp.  I believe this was one of the last of the Bristol-made movements that appears in a New Haven-labeled clock.  It’s quite possible that this was an unfinished movement salvaged from the fire.  That might account for the absence of a maker’s stamp.

Period appropriate replaced tablet. Two examples of this tablet are known; the other was reported in the Sep/Oct 2016 NAWCC Bulletin (No. 423, pg. 423) in a clock made by H. Webster of Burlington, CT.
