I believe this clock started life intended for Ray & Ingraham and was made by (Noble) Jerome & Grant. Ray & Ingraham went out of business suddenly in 1843, and I’m speculating that they had some undelivered, finished clocks waiting for them at Jerome & Grant. To salvage the clock, J&G slapped a Chauncey Jerome label on it and sold it to Chauncey for resale. J&G were known suppliers of clocks and movements to both Ray & Ingraham and Chauncey.
Label with “CHAUNCEY JEROME” overpaste; similar labels for Ray & Ingraham, associated with Jerome & Grant movements, have been documented. Printer’s line reads “JOSEPH HURLBUT, PRINTER, HARTFORD.”
