The design for the Waterbury Square Rose was patented by S.B. Jerome (Chauncey’s son) on Oct. 20, 1857 (see the 30-hr version for more information). Based on the patent date and an inscription on the backboard (see below), a date range of 1857-1862 seems reasonable. The upper glass has been replaced, and the dial was overpasted with a cardboard dial when I bought it. Not only was it overpasted, but it was also attached with 20 rivets. Shown in the image to the left is my restoration. The upper glass should have spandrels like those in the upper corners of the tablet.
Attractive label but no printer is identified

Type 2.171 8-day movement (back)
Maker’s stamp “WATERBURY/CLOCK CO/CT”
An interesting inscription on the backboard stating, “Sold Nov 20-1862/$ 9 50/100”. A sale price of $9.50 seems plausible. According to one on-line calculator, $9.50 in 1862 would be worth approximately $210 today.
