Chauncey Jerome Column & Cornice

121112-1-1

Although showing a bit of wear, this is an example of a column & cornice clock, with a stepped cornice (as opposed to one with an ogee curve).  This version is shown in an 1852 Jerome trade catalog, although the movement and label lead me to believe the clock dates to a few years after that.  Although not necessarily a statistically robust estimate, my photo archives suggest these clocks may have represented roughly 18% of Jerome’s 30-hr weight-driven clock production from 1852-1855, compared to 82% ogee clocks.

Label printed by John Benham, with a 55 Orange St. address.  This is the first of Jerome’s labels without the word “PATENT” in the description.

1314-1

Type 1.314 30-hr movement (front), with no maker’s stamp.  One thing that distinguishes this movement from earlier ones is the use of a rivet, instead of a screw, to hold the verge pin.

1314-2

Type 1.314 30-hr movement (back)
